Ranches for Sale in Utah: Soil Sequestration in the Beehive State

The Utah Legislature recently passed HCR 8, dubbed as the Concurrent Resolution on Carbon Sequestration on Rangelands. This resolution—authored by Rep. Mike Noel, R-Kanab and David Hinkins, R-Orangeville, and signed by Gov. Gary Herbert on March 25, 2015—emphasizes that soil sequestration of atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2) in forest and rangeland soils is the Beehive State’s primary approach regarding any federally initiated efforts in dealing with global climate issues.

HCR 8 adds that well-managed farms, forests, and rangelands can effectively sequester huge amounts of atmospheric CO2 in the long term by enhancing the natural process of synthesis and plant growth. The resolution also encourages the implementation of advanced farming techniques to enhance carbon soil sequestration on agricultural lands to increase drought resistance, as well as eliminate or reduce the use of pesticides, herbicides, and chemical fertilizers, along with the environmental damage that they have wrought.

Building a Sustainable Ranch in Utah

Successfully making ranches for sale in Utah sustainable will depend heavily on making the air, soil, and water healthy. With the three components managed properly, they can become renewable resources in an agricultural production setting. This is the duty that all responsible ranchers must take on, inherently making them the stewards of the land. When ranchers manage land for the health of the community and ecosystem, everybody benefits.

HCR 8’s Main Purpose

HCR 8 and other initiatives like it are designed to improve sustainability in agricultural lands. Their main purpose is to help farmers and ranchers improve soil productivity and resources, improve or protect water quality, and use water efficiently. Management practices and tools are selected based on their ability to enhance not only a farm or ranch’s profitability, but its productive integrity as well.
